about

Written just after my wife Robbin's death in 1995, this is without a doubt the most poignant piece of music I've ever written or will ever write. It explains the raw emotions I was feeling immediately after her suicide, and how one's life can completely change in an instant. This song was a conversation with her after the fact, and has been revived from lost archives thanks to my amazing brother, Steve Brewer, who also plays guitars on this track. I am proud to share it with all of you.

Sheet Of Ice
Music and Lyrics: Poke © 1995

Hello baby, can you hear me?
I've been trying for the longest time to talk to you.
Maybe I can hear you answer, maybe it's my head, I don't know.

But I'm reaching for your face as I'm reaching for the light,
As I face another day I face another lonely fight.
Can't you see what I've become after all is said and done?
Just a teardrop flowing down a sheet of ice.

You used to say that you'd be with me;
Well baby I don't feel your presence now.
And after all we've done, the worst is yet to come, this I know.

And I reach to touch your face as I'm turning out the light,
As I face another day, I face another losing fight.
Can't you see what I've become after all is said and done?
Just a teardrop flowing down a sheet of ice.

They used to say it's what I've done...
Well all the churches in the world can't change that now.
Does God protect the sinners and take away the very good at heart?

And the problem with forever is that we never get to see forever now.
And if you're beyond the universe, I pray that I will one day see you there somehow.

But I'm still reaching for your face as I'm turning out the light,
I know tomorrow I will face another struggle to survive.
Can't you see what I've become after all is said and done?
Just a teardrop flowing down a sheet of ice.

And I still can see your face as they're turning out the light (the police),
Was it just another battle ending the fight to stay alive?
Can't you see what we've become after all is said and done?
Just a teardrop freezing on a sheet of ice.
